Mel Bradshaw

Mel Bradshaw was born in Toronto Ontario, and completed his B.A. in English and philosophy at the University of Toronto. He continued studying philosophy – mostly ethics and aesthetics – at New College, Oxford.

Mel’s first novel was the critically acclaimed Death in the Age of Steam is a historical mystery set in Toronto in 1856. It was named ForeWard Magazines book of the year. His second book, Quarrel with the Foe is the first in a series of police procedural set in Toronto in the 1920’s.

James Hawkins

James Hawkins is the author of the Inspector Bliss novels. James was a police commander in the U.K. for 20 years and a Canadian private investigator for a further 8 years. He was also director of education at the Canadian Institute for Environmental Investigations. His debut novel, Missing: Presumed Dead (2001), was shortlisted for the Arthur Ellis Award for Best First Novel. James divides his time living part of the year on Vancouver Island and half the year traveling in England and France.

Gail Bowen
Gail Bowen was born Gail Bartholomew in Toronto, she learned to read by age three from tombstones in Prospect Cemetery, a facility that was extremely useful when she was struck by polio two years later. She was educated at the University of Toronto (B.A.), University of Waterloo (M.A.), and the University of Saskatchewan, where she almost completed a Ph.D. Gail is an Associate Professor and Head of the English Department at First Nations University of Canada.

Gail is the author of the award winning Joanne Kilbourn mysteries. There are nine books in the series to date. Deadly Appearances, Murder at the Mendel and The Wandering Soul Murders have been adapted for television by CTV. A Colder Kind of Death won the Arthur Ellis Award for best book.

N.J. Lindquist
N. J. is the author of nine books, including the adult mystery Shaded Light and eight books for young adults. She also has a Christmas play and over 200 published articles, columns, and stories.

N. J. has a double-major in Psychology and English from Brandon University, where she received the English medal at graduation; and a Certificate in Education from the University of Manitoba. She taught high school for two years, and was named Teacher of the Year. She was also a home schooling pioneer, specializing in the needs of gifted and creative children.

Lyn Hamilton
Lyn Hamilton is the author of the Lara McClintoch archeological mysteries. Toronto based antique dealer Lara travels the world in search of rare objects for her Yorkville shop. Each book takes place in a different exotic location and involves Lara in murder, mystery and mayhem. The clues in Lara’s adventures usually rely heavily on the past and allow the reader a glimpse into the fascinating history of each country Lara visits.

The first book in the series, The Xibalba Murders, was nominated for an Arthur Ellis Award for best first crime novel in Canada, and the eighth, The Magyar Venus was nominated for an Ellis award for best crime novel. The Celtic Riddle formed the basis for the 2003 Murder She Wrote TV Movie starring Angela Lansbury.

Lyn attended the University of Toronto where courses in cultural and physical anthropology inspired her interest in ancient cultures. Lyn worked for six years as the Director of the Ontario Cultural Programs Branch responsible for the licensing of all archeology in the province.

ILLONA HAUS
Illona Haus published her first mystery, Blue Mercy in 2005. Blue Mercy is the first book in the Kay Delaney series, police procedurals set in Baltimore.

Illona’s interest in Baltimore began with Homicide, Life on the Streets. The series intrigued her so much she posted a query on an online newsgroup requesting more information about the city.

This query lead to a friendship between Illona and a Baltimore Homicide Detective Sergeant. The friendship led to a romance with one of the Sergeants detectives and the romance lead to Illona taking up residence in “Charm City” for the next ten years. Now back in Waterloo Ontario Illona is hard at work on the second book in the series, Blue Valor.

Maureen Jennings
Maureen Jennings’s is the author of a series of historical police procedurals set in Toronto in the Victorian era featuring Detective William Murdoch. The first novel, Except the Dying, was shortlisted for both the Arthur Ellis and the Anthony first novel awards.

The influential Drood Review picked Poor Tom Is Cold as one of its favourite mysteries of 2001. And Let Loose the Dogs was shortlisted for the 2004 Anthony Award for best historical mystery. Three novels have been adapted for television with two more in development.

Maureen was born on Eastfield Road in Birmingham, England and spent her formative years there until she emigrated to Canada at the age of seventeen. She attended the University of Windsor where she attained a BA in philosophy and psychology followed by an MA in English literature from the University of Toronto. She taught English at the Ryerson Polytechnical Institute for the next eight years.

Vicki Delany
Vicki Delany is the author of Scare the Light Away, Whiteout, and Murder at Lost Dog Lake. Golddigger, the first novel in Klondike Mystery series will be published in 2006.

Vicki lives in Oakville, Ontario, where she is employed as a systems analyst, but her first love is the Canadian wilderness where her novels are set. She is a member of Crime Writers of Canada and is the editor of the Sisters in Crime, Toronto Chapter, newsletter. She is the proud mother of three adult daughters

Rick Blechta
Rick Blechta has written four books, Knock on Wood, The Lark Ascending, Shooting Straight in the Dark and Cemetery of the Nameless. Rick has been a musician all his life and brings an insiders perspective to his crime fiction.

Rick was born in New Rochelle, NY and raised in Westchester County, north of New York City. He emigrated to Canada in 1971 to complete a Bachelor of Music degree at McGill University in Montreal. Rick spent many years touring with a rock band before becoming a music teacher in Etobicoke and then the Toronto District School Board.

Michelle Wan
Michelle Wan published her first mystery, Deadly Slipper in 2005. Deadly Slipper is the first book in a new mystery series published by Doubleday Books. The books are set in the Dordogne region of France and chronicle the adventures of two engaging amateur sleuths, Mara Dunn and Julian Wood.

Michelle born in Kunming, China, grew up in the United States, and has lived in India, England, France, and Brazil. She and her husband, a tropical horticulturalist, visit the Dordogne annually to photograph and chart wild orchids. They live in Guelph, Ontario, Canada.

Giles Blunt
Giles Blunt is the author three police procedurals set in Algonquin Bay, a fictionalized version of North Bay, Ontario. There are three books in the series so far featuring detectives John Cardinal and Lise Delorme, Forty Words for Sorrow, The Delicate Storm and Blackfly Season.

Forty Words for Sorrow won the British Crime Writers’ Macallan Silver Dagger and The Delicate Storm received the Arthur Ellis Award for best novel.

Giles Blunt grew up in North Bay, Ontario. After spending over twenty years in New York City, he has recently moved back to Toronto. In addition to his three novels he has written scripts for Law & Order, Street Legal and Night Heat.

Mary Jane Maffini
Mary Jane Maffini is the author of the Camilla McPhee and Fiona Silk mysteries. Camilla is based in Ottawa and runs and advocacy agency for victims of violent crime. Ottawa is a city known for it’s many festivals and each of Camilla’s misadventures is centered around one of these special events. There are five books featuring Camilla, Speak Ill of the Dead, Icing on the Corpse, Little Boy Blues, The Devil’s in the Details and The Dead Don’t Get Out Much. Fiona is a failed romance writer who lives in a fictional west Quebec town. The first book in this series is Lament for a Lounge Lizard.
Mary Jane was born in Sydney, N.S., and has a BA (Hons) and MLS from Dalhousie University. She began her career in public libraries and, among other things, has been Librarian of the Brewers' Association of Canada, Director of the Statistics Canada Library, Chief of the Federal Government's Depository Services Program, Director of Continuing Education for the Canadian Library Association, and Director of Information Services and Products Development for CISTI (NRC). She lives and writes in Ottawa. She is a member of The Ladies Killing Circle Inc. but has never pulled the plug on anyone.
